Elevated Work Platform (OSSA-ESC)

This is a classroom-based 1-day OSSA (ESC)-certified course in elevated work platforms available at SCS every week. SCS partners with the Oil Sands Safety Association (now part of ESC) to make sure we can bring you this elevated work platform training, which is an industry-standard course required on OSSA-partnership worksites in Alberta and recognized across other industries and sectors.

In our OSSA-certified Elevated Work Platform course, you will learn the theory and skills for you to be able to drive, set up, operate, and work safely from elevated work platforms of all types.

Course Content

If in your job you need to operate elevated work platforms—sometimes called aerial platforms, man lifts, scissor lifts, or boom lifts—you need technical training to use that heavy equipment safely. Mobile and powered lifts present a serious risk of injury or death in case of accidents or untrained use.

Course topics include the following:

– Legislative standards
– Elevated work platform types
– Elevated work platform system components
– Fall hazards and controls
– PPE specifically related to elevated work platforms
– Load limitations and calculations
– Factors affecting stability
– Machine-specific features
– Inspection and maintenance of elevated work platforms and relevant components

In this course you will learn the legislation that applies in Alberta and Canada-wide for elevated work platform use as well as the industry-specific codes of practice in place. You’ll learn the major types and designs of EWPs, and their operating and technical differences, and also the major components of an EWP, their functions, and points of inspection to examine prior and after use.

You will cover how to recognize, quantify, and control a fall hazard and the PPE needed for workers at heights and those driving or operating these EWPs. Technical information will also include how to determine load limitations and calculate them, features unique to each type of EWP, factors affecting stability, and what can be done to improve stability of the lift. Inspection and maintenance topics are also discussed.

Prerequisites and PPE

You need to have and bring along current fall protection certification to enroll in this course.

You also need to bring your standard personal protective equipment (PPE), which includes approved hard hat, CSA approved steel toed boots and safety glasses, and seasonal leather/cold weather gloves.

Note: All courses require you to have government-issued photo ID.
