Confined Space Entry and Monitor (OSSA-ESC)

This is a classroom-based 1-day OSSA (ESC)-certified course in confined space entry and monitor available at SCS multiple times a week. SCS partners with the Oil Sands Safety Association (now part of ESC) to make sure we can bring you this confined space training, which is an industry-standard course required on OSSA-partnership worksites in Alberta and recognized across other industries and sectors.

If you have to enter or monitor confined spaces for work you need training in the unique hazards of those environments. Confined and restricted spaces pose a serious risk of injury or death in case of accidents or untrained entry. In our OSSA-certified Confined Space Entry and Monitor course, you will learn the theory and skills to keep both you and your co-workers safe.

Course Content

Confined spaces can conceal atmospheric hazards, entrapment, engulfment, and many other dangers. Rescue from these spaces is often slow, technical, and difficult. So it is critical to know the potential hazards and how to address them. This course will give you that vital information, including practical exercises.

Course topics include the following:

– Hazards of confined spaces
– Preparation for entry
– Work practices in confined spaces
– Use of SCBA or SABA
– Post-entry debriefing
– Legislative standards
– OSSA classification of confined space entries
– Hazardous atmospheres and testing
– Entry authorization
– Duties and responsibilities

In this course you will learn the legislation that governs confined space entry and confined space monitors, including your duties and responsibilities as a worker entering or monitoring confined spaces. You will also find out the OSSA classifications of confined spaces and how that relates to worksites using the OSSA Code of Practice.

You’ll learn all about the unique hazards in confined spaces, and how they are controlled. This includes determining what classifies as a hazardous atmosphere and how is it tested safely. Related to such atmospheres, you will learn about the use of self-contained or supplied-air breathing apparatus devices (SCBA or SABA) within confined spaces, and what device is best suited for what application.

Entry authorization is also covered, and includes information on how is entry controlled, recorded, and restricted appropriately. You will also learn the steps for preparing for entry including the permit processes on OSSA-affiliated worksites. Finally, you will learn about post-entry debriefings, where you discuss what went right and wrong in a confined space entry, and how to learn from success and failures.
